Practice Policies
The goal of our swim practices to help our swimmers improve their technique, strength and speed while also having fun. To help our swimmers learn about what we expect at each practice, we have a series of guidelines outlined on this page.
Note: All practices are optional, however, in order for any given swimmer to be eligible to compete in a meet, they need to attend at least one practice a week.
Supplies and Equipment
Swimmers will need to bring two pairs of googles to every practice so they have a backup in case one pair breaks. Swim googles are not delicate, but they aren't indestructible either. You can search for swim googles here.
Swimmers will also need to bring a towel as well as a bag for their fins, kickboard, pull buoy, and paddles if they have them. Swim caps are recommended for both boys and girls, but are not required.
Swimmers should always bring a water bottle. Summer is hot, and as crazy as it sounds, swimmers actually sweat while in the water. This means that they will get dehydrated if they are not drinking enough water during, before and after practice. Dehydration could result in as little as a headache, cramps, or even a medical emergency.
Rules
Rule #1: Swimmers must be on time to practice and ready to swim when they arrive (in their suit, with their goggles and cap on, and have gone to the bathroom before practice has started). It is generally rude to other swimmers and coaches for swimmers to be both late and unprepared for practice upon arrival. Swimmers are not required to be at every practice, however, it is strongly recommended that they come to every practice available.
Rule #2: Swimmers will be attentive and respectful to their coach and will follow instructions without attitudes or backtalk. There is nothing wrong with asking why a certain workout or set is given, but complaining about it or pouting is immature and uncalled for.
Rule #3: Swimmers will treat their teammates with respect. Everyone should feel safe to practice and learn at the J. Bullying/Hazing will not be tolerated under any circumstance. If a coach witnesses a bullying incident, the offender will be sat out for the rest of the practice, their parents will receive a phone call, and they will not be allowed to compete at the next meet. Profanity/Cussing is also not allowed. At the first offense, the offender will be given a verbal warning. The second offense will result in the offender being removed from the practice and parents will be informed.
Rule #4: All pool rules apply to the swim team! This means no running on the pool deck, no dunking or rough housing, and no diving unless a coach is present and has given permission to do so.
Rule #5: If your swimmer is confused or needs help with technique, diving, or anything related to swimming, please ask the coaches! We are here to help every swimmer learn, grow and succeed in world of competitive swimming!
